Preston North End manager Graham Westley has hailed the spirit in his squad as they got off their pre-season campaign off to a winning start.
The Lilywhites’ boss said the 2-0 victory over Blue Square Premier outfit Southport on Saturday was a “positive” way to get started.
Former skipper Paul Coutts completed his move to Championship side Derby County just hours before kick-off and other first-team regulars, including striker Iain Hume, were missing at Haig Avenue.
Speaking after the game, he said: “They are a smart enough bunch to know you do not win anything without togetherness.
“They want to make sure their unity is a real feature of the way they behave and I am sure it will be.”
North End travel to Chorley on Tuesday night with a trip to Morecambe the next stage of their build-up on Saturday.
