Westley hails team spirit

Preston North End Manager Graham Westley during their game against Southport

Preston North End Manager Graham Westley during their game against Southport

Preston North End manager Graham Westley has hailed the spirit in his squad as they got off their pre-season campaign off to a winning start.

The Lilywhites’ boss said the 2-0 victory over Blue Square Premier outfit Southport on Saturday was a “positive” way to get started.

Former skipper Paul Coutts completed his move to Championship side Derby County just hours before kick-off and other first-team regulars, including striker Iain Hume, were missing at Haig Avenue.

Speaking after the game, he said: “They are a smart enough bunch to know you do not win anything without togetherness.

“They want to make sure their unity is a real feature of the way they behave and I am sure it will be.”

North End travel to Chorley on Tuesday night with a trip to Morecambe the next stage of their build-up on Saturday.

For a full review of the pre-season opener, don’t miss Monday’s Evening Post.
