Super Summers seals crucial win

On the attack: Garstang Ladies Hockey Clubs Di Roe

On the attack: Garstang Ladies Hockey Clubs Di Roe

Garstang Ladies 1sts got the better of newly promoted Clitheroe, with Fran Summers grabbing the game’s only goal.

Di Roe was prominent for Garstang in the early stages, running down the left wing, and Jude Chapman in the centre also impressed with some runs on the break.

Josie Rice made some great reverse-stick interceptions as the Clitheroe players overran the ball, creating space for the Garstang forwards.

Clitheroe won a penalty corner after 16 minutes and a mid-height drag-flick was well hand saved by Sarah Skelton in the Garstang goal.

Garstang were the quicker team on the break and Wendy Howarth and Ro failed to convert one-on-ones with the Clitheroe keeper.

On the right, Lily Helme’s electric pace continually discomforted Clitheroe both in attack and defence.

Garstang continued to make good intercepts and the balance of play went end to end.

After 27 minutes Clitheroe won another penalty corner, followed by a long corner and Lyndsey Hayes made two good clearances under pressure in front of goal.

When the ball was cleared it went to Summers on the right, just in the Garstang half.

She beat two players, drove into the ‘D’, beat another defender and then put a raised reverse-stick hit beyond a despairing Clitheroe keeper for the goal of the season.

In the second half, Clitheroe came out strongly and soon forced another good clearance from Skelton.

Donna Richardson had a superb game in the Garstang defence, keeping the quick Clitheroe forward under wraps.

Clitheroe’s pressure was almost rewarded following a penalty corner when they had a goal disallowed. Garstang drove back, won a penalty corner of their own forcing the keeper to kick clear.

Donna Richardson had to come off the pitch having been struck hard and painfully.

But the game was won by a superb defensive performance by Garstang, and sealed by a moment of magic Summers.

This weekend, Garstang are at home to unbeaten league leaders Didsbury Grays.
