Glossy performance by improving Matt

Matthew Howarth

Matthew Howarth

Matt Howarth produced the best individual performance of the week in the Preston Table Tennis League.

Playing for Astra F, the teenager returned three excellent wins against Division Two leaders Riverside E, and also partnered Harry Bates to victory in the doubles, meaning Riverside had to settle for a 6-4 win.

Chorley joined Astra F in second place after an 8-2 win over Villa, with Dave Ries and Jeff Tweedie winning three apiece.

Charlie Keenan won his three games to help lead Gryf C to a 7-3 success over Preston Colts.

Riverside F won by the same scoreline over Fulwood Meths, with Dave Arnold winning his three games.

Jacobaeus B were the sections’s biggest winners, 9-1 against Ashton Meths B, with Frank Bailey and 12-year-old Oliver Garmston winning all their games.

Ashton Meths A are making a strong bid for back-to-back promotions.

Last season as newcomers to the league, they stormed to the Division Two title.

And after a 10-0 whitewash of Lyons Lane B in their latest match, they are now in third place in Division One, just five points off leaders Riverside B.

They suffered a shock 6-4 reverse to Riverside C in their latest match as Ian Pemberton, Rob Hutton and Mick Mahon each returned two victories.

In second place just two points off the top are Jacobaeus A following their 7-3 success over Croston B, with John Porter and Paul Grayham both scoring three wins.

Mike Armishaw won all his games to lead Garstang B to a 7-3 win over Gryf B, while Ken Wright was the star player as Astra D beat fellow strugglers Riverside D 7-3.

In the Premier Division, leaders Astra A whitewashed their C team.

But Astra B struggled and fell to an 8-2 defeat to Gryf A, with teenager Jordan Brookes winning all his matches.

Willy Fluss was in excellent form for Kirkham as they beat Deepdale 6-4, while Ben Drulia and Phil Crankshaw each enjoyed three super wins as Riverside A toppled defending champions St Austin’s 7-3.

In a real game of nip and tuck, Garstang A and BAC/EE A cancelled each other out in a 5-5 draw, with Preston champion Andy Clark just pipping Martin Wyatt 11/8 4/11 13/11 7/11 11/7 in the evening’s best game.

Ronnie Pennington won all his games as URCL beat BAC/EE B 6-4.
