Brilliant day for the Barracudas!

Leyland Barracudas entered 23 swimmers at the Level 2 Wigan Best Future Stars 2012 open competition.

Swimmers from all over the North West battled it out for the medals and this was another opportunity for Leyland’s youngsters to gain county and regional times.

Fourteen-year-old Tom Shaw was in great form as he paved the way picking up eight medals in total – three gold, three silver and two bronze and he set a new record in the 50m backstroke for this competition which was being held for its second time.

The youngest member of the Leyland contingent nine-year- old Kyle McKenna showed his fellow team-mates what it was all about as he picked up three gold medals and two silvers. He also set two new records in the 50m and 200m backstroke events.

McKenna also gained the prestigious title of ‘top boy’ in his age group.

Twelve-year-olds Ben Martin and Nathan Coll also struck gold, Martin also gained two silver medals and Coll earned himself a silver mand also broke the record in the 50m freestyle event – making it four new records for Leyland.

Ten-year-old Pia Murray led the girls tally picking up four silver medals and Johnny Rowland (11) made the podium winning three silvers and a bronze medal.

Eleven-year-olds Isabel Cockerham gained a silver medal and two bronze medals while Ellie Cameron earned herself a silver and a bronze medal.

Three further swimmers picked up a medal each – 10-year-old Anna Dutton and Morgan Gaskell-French (11) won a silver medal. Twelve-year-old Cameron Massey earned a bronze medal.

Other swimmers, who competed at this event were Rebecca Handley, Lucy Newton, Maggie Stock, Leah Williams, Heather King, Ella Snaylam, Rhianna Cheshire, Ben Porter, Kyo Tanner, Brandon Davies, Jacob Hughes and Nicholas Massey.

During this event, many of the swimmers gained qualifying times for the county championships early next year and the following swimmers all managed to bag two qualifying times into the North West Regional Championships which will take place in June 2013 – Johnny Rowland, Ellie Cameron, Isabel Cockerham and Lucy Newton. Chief Coach Gillian Rankin was delighted with all her swimmers.

She said: “The hard work carried out during training by the swimmers and the dedication of the coaching team is paying off.”
