Leyland Barracudas chief coach Gillian Rankin had her young Micro A swimmers all fired up for the opening match of the season as they pipped Preston to victory.

Hosts Fleetwood and Carnforth were the other opponents.

Leyland got off to a superb start during the first eight relay events taking four first places and three second spots.

Both the nine-year-old old girls – Lucy Hollings, Emma Fisher, Erin Lee-Smith and Annie Pearce – and boys (Alexander Dillon, Oliver Pearce, Lewis Pugh and Kyle McKenna) touched home first in their first ever competitive team event, the freestyle relay.

The 11-year-old girls team of Ellie Cameron, Rebecca Handley, Lucy Handford and Morgan Gaskell-French also won their freestyle relay event.

The 12-year-old boys – Brandon Davies, Ben Martin, Nathan Coll and Johnny Rowland – stormed home to touch home first in the medley relay.

During the individual events Kyle McKenna (9) and Nathan Coll (12) had incredible swims to win both their events.

Other swimmers who won an event were Emma Fisher, Alexander Dillon, Jacob Hughes, Ellie Cameron and Johnny Rowland.

Leyland again dominated the relay events during the latter stages of the match, winning five out of eight and coming second in the other three.

The same nine-year-old old boys this time won the medley event.

The 10-year-old girls’ and boys’ teams – Ella Snaylam, Anna Dutton, Grace Thomson and Pia Murray, and Jacob Hughes, Kyo Tanner, Ben Porter and Aiden Moore – all swam great legs in the freestyle relay event to touch home in first place.

The same 12-year-old boys also won the freestyle relay, as did the 12-year-old old girls’ team of Lucy Newton, Lucy Randell, Isabel Cockerham and Maggie Stock.

And to cement the dominance of the Leyland swimmers in freestyle, the cannon team struck gold to rapturous applause from the Leyland supporters. Lucy Hollings, Kyle McKenna, Anna Dutton, Jacob Hughes, Morgan Gaskell-French, Johnny Rowland, Lucy Newton and Ben Martin finished off what was a glorious first match of the season.

Other swimmers who also were part of this winning team were Amy Taylor, Nicholas Massey, Christopher Smith and Ellie Pearson.

Overall result:

1st – Leyland A, 151 points

2nd – Preston A, 147 points

3rd – Carnforth A, 105 points

4th – Fleetwood, 85 points
