PNE in cup KO

Morecambe gained some revenge for last week’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat by knocking Preston North End out of the Lancashire Senior Cup.

The first-round tie at Springfields went to penalties after the 90 minutes produced a 1-1 draw.

Richard Brodie had fired the Shrimps ahead early in the second half, before Andy Procter pulled PNE level in the 69th minute.

In the shoot-out, Jack King put his penalty wide, with Andy Wright converting to give the visitors the advantage.

North End skipper Shane Cansdell-Sherriff saw his effort saved by former Lilywhites keeper Andreas Arestidou, Brodie then netting.

David Amoo was the first home player to be successful from the spot, and after Steve Simonsen pushed Will Haining’s effort on to the post, Graham Cummins scored to bring PNE level.

Izak Reid then made it 3-2, meaning Keammar Daley had to net his to keep Preston in the competition – but he shot over.

Daley’s inclusion was his first slice of action this season, having until recently been training apart from the North End squad.

Both clubs fielded strong sides, including several who had featured in last week’s JPT tie at the Globe Arena which had ended in a 4-2 Preston
victory.

It was the Shrimps who drew first blood in the 56th minute, BRODIE seizing on a loose ball to run clear and tuck a low shot past Simonsen.

North End levelled 13 minutes later, Chris Beardsley using his strength to hold off a challenge as he chased a ball down the right-hand side of the box.

He pulled it back into the middle, where PROCTER ran in to slam a first-time shot past Arestidou from 12 yards.

PRESTON: Simonsen, Amoo, Huntington, Robertson, Cansdell-Sherriff, Daley, King, Procter, Hayhurst, Beardsley, Cummins. Unused subs: Davies, Kuba-Kuba, Zibaka, Sowerby, James.

Morecambe: Arestidou, Wright, McCready (Haining 46), Parrish, Short, Reid, Fleming, McGee, Mwasile, Brodie, Burrow. Unused subs: Drummond, Alessandra, Roche.
