McIlroy's aiming to make a loan swoop

Wheeler-dealer Sammy McIlroy is closing the net on a loan signing ahead of tonight's home date with Burton Albion.

The Shrimps closed the gap on the play-off pack to five points with a 2-0 win over Darlington, but the Morecambe boss wants to increase his options.

"I'd like to bring a fresh face in, it would give us a nice boost in terms of competition for places," said McIlroy.

"We've had discussions, but it would probably mean me having to let a player go first.

"It depends on a couple of things falling into place, but I'm reasonably hopeful we might be able to get something done."

Phil Jevons and Paul Mullin were on the mark against Darlington as the strike duo started together for the first time since Boxing Day.

Mullin has been out with a knee injury but the pair's goals sealed Morecambe's first win in four games against the league's bottom club.

McIlroy added: "It's great to see them back together and it so important that they stay fit and firing if we are going to reach the play-offs.

"They score goals but also work hard for the team and they have a good understanding between them.

"Mullin is a brave lad, he takes the knocks from the defenders, and they've both a terrific eye for goal."

Morecambe were beaten 5-2 at Burton in the first week of the campaign and McIlroy added: "We are a much better side now – it would be nice to put the record straight against them.

"It was our worst display of the season at Burton, a very distressing performance.

"But we've come on in leaps and bounds since then. We are a much more solid outfit."
