Garstang Hockey Club ladies 1sts continued their winning start to the season with a 2-0 triumph against Clitheroe and Blackburn Northern 2nds.

Clearly still rattled by the end of their previous game, when they let in two late
goals but hung on to win, Garstang started nervously and kept giving the ball
away.

A break in play for an injury allowed Garstang to re-group and they were more settled when the game restarted.

Some nice passing moves through the midfield created good scoring opportunities
for the Reds, who were unable to capitalise until Josie Rice drew a foul on the edge of
the D.

Rice took it quickly, crossing to Catherine Godbold who deftly flicked the ball over the scrambling Northern defence into the back of the net.

Garstang’s second goal came soon after, when a high press led to a mistake from a Clitheroe defender.

The initial strike was saved by the keeper but the rebound fell kindly for Godbold, who smashed the ball into the bottom corner for her second.

In the second half, Clitheroe came out fighting and pressed high into the Garstang half but the defence organised themselves well and held firm.

In particular, the centre duo of Lindsay Norton and Donna Richardson were rock solid.

Garstang created a number of good chances in the second half but were thwarted by Clitheroe’s keeper – ex-Garstang player Megan Ditchfield – who kept the score down to two.
