Injury-hit Garstang lost 2-0 away to promotion-chasing Formby Ladies 1sts.
The Reds are rooted to the bottom of the Women’s North Hockey League Division Two North West table.
But Garstang battled back from last week’s loss and nearly shocked second-placed Formby with five late penalty corners.
Captain Lindsay Norton injured her ankle just before the push-back and, within the first minute, midfielder Emily Cross went over on her ankle, and had to be stretchered off and taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Norton hobbled on up front and Garstang shifted their formation to suit. This modification turned into a transformation for the side as Alice Matthews’ slotted into the sweeper role.
Player-of-the-match Matthews commanded the back line, switched play across the park and made timely tackles.
Garstang were fighting hard and the strong back line, with Donna Richardson and Vicky Bradley on the wings, were proving difficult to break down.
But Formby took the lead in the closing stages of the first half, as the home side dispatched a penalty corner past Sarah Skelton in goal.
This did not deter Garstang and they came straight out of the blocks in the second half and piled pressure on the Formby defence. Diane Roe was pushing down the right, creating numerous chances for Garstang.
But Formby showed their class, breaking down the right wing before a forward finished in style high into the net for their second.
Despite trailing 2-0 Garstang finished on top with some good pressure.
They were awarded five penalty corners but were unable to convert any set-pieces or open-play chances.
Garstang ladies 2nds bounced back to beat Lancaster 2nds 2-1 at home.
After back-to-back defeats Garstang dispatched Lancaster thanks to a moment of brilliance by Olivia Huyton.
Rachael Roe and Jemma Hampson made some great interceptions and pushed the ball back up-field.
After some neat passing around the D, Wendy Howarth slotted home to give Garstang the lead.
Lancaster had a goal from a penalty corner disallowed before half-time.
The visitors made no mistake in the second half and levelled the scores.
But Garstang found a winner four minutes from time as Louise Richardson teed up Huyton.
She skilfully picked up the pass and sprinted towards goal.
The keeper stopped her first shot but she spectacularly smashed the rebound high into the top left-hand corner.
