Kirkham Grammar School’s Under-15s hockey girls ran out 1-0 winners against Wakefield.
The KGS team were rock solid at the back with Molly Bedford dominating and taking control.
Amy Barrow and Charlotte Beard were calm and composed coming out of defence and Ellie Moss marked their centre-forward out of the game.
Olivia Huyton, Maddie Fox and Lauren Williamson worked tirelessly up and down the pitch creating a constant wave of attack.
Kirkham’s forwards moved well and caused constant problems for the opposing defence.
Zara Ikram, Jamie Curran and Emma Coffey provided real width and Beth Heatley scored yet again to give KGS a well-deserved 1-0 victory.
But there was no joy for Kirkham’s Under-14s girls, who were beaten 1-0 by Wakefield School.
KGS dominated large parts of the game but were unable to convert their dominance into the goals their play deserved.
Under-13s’ pair Emily Dignan and Hannah Mears stepped up and joined the squad ahead of this week’s Nationals and both acquitted themselves well against a strong Wakefield side.
Wakefield took the lead midway through the first-half when an attacker was left unmarked behind the KGS defence and had plenty of time to fire low into the bottom corner.
A late short corner gave KGS a chance to salvage something from the game.
But Lucie Ethell’s excellent strike from the top of the D was deflected onto the post by the Wakefield keeper.
Kirkham and Wakefield’s Under-13s battled to a 2-2 draw.
KGS scored the first two goals with great attacking play in the first half.
Hannah Mears drove the ball in for the first goal from the edge of the D in open play.
The second goal came shortly afterwards again in open play.
After Wakefield hauled themselves level, neither side managed to add to their score in the second period.
