Longridge’s Mark Young finished the first round of the Open with 74 in a satisfying debut appearance at a Major.

Despite having only turned professional eight months ago, the former conservatory manufacturer from Longridge nestled into the pack, keeping track with the course’s par until the fourth hole, where he recorded a bogey.

Tied at 110 with fellow countryman Alister Balcombe among a pack on the same score, Young resumes his campaign at 10.39am with the USA’s Daniel Berger and Sweden’s Pelle Edberg.

Young managed birdies on the fifth, sixth and eighth holes, with only further bogeys on the ninth, 13th, 16th and 17th holes blotting his copybook.

The Clitheroe Golf Club ace returns to the fairway this morning with hopes of earning his chance to play on the weekend – though it might prove too much a task at nine shots behind the lead.
