Shrimps on up says Jevons

Morecambe's talisman Phil Jevons reckons the Shrimps are heading for League One.

Hot-shot Jevons leads the Christie Park scoring charts and is set for a welcome return in time for tomorrow's home game against Barnet.

Jevons, ruled out since Christmas with a back injury, said: "I think we've got one of the best squads in the division and can give promotion a big shot.

"We sent out a powerful message last month when beating Bournemouth 5-0.

"It was a scintillating display and if we can produce that sort of form consistently, then we've a real chance.

"Rochdale are the outstanding team, but there are six other places up for grabs and we can take one of them.

"At the start of the season we just lacked a bit of belief and we made a slow start, drawing a lot.

"But now we've got players back and firing, and Sammy McIlroy and Mark Lillis have infused a great spirit."

Jevons has provided the cutting edge at Christie Park this term, his 13 league goals taking the side into play-off contention following a run of seven straight league wins before Christmas.

But defeats to Accrington and leaders Rochdale on December in Morecambe's last league action, brought the Shrimps back down to earth with a bump.

Jevons, on loan from Huddersfield until the end of the season, added: "We didn't play well in either game, but it wasn't a disaster – we are in the hunt, a handful of points behind the play-offs.

"What I really like about the squad is the blend of youth and experience. Jim Bentley, our captain, is a fantastic leader and several clubs are looking at our younger players, which is always a good sign."
