Sammy aims to arrest Shrimps’ slide
Morecambe travel to Oxford United tomorrow searching for their first league win of the season.
Despite defeating Coventry City in the Carling Cup, league wise the Shrimps have drawn twice at home and lost both their away games. They were also dumped out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday, losing 1-0 to Macclesfield.
Manager Sammy McIlroy is looking to put things right as soon as posssible, starting tomorrow at the Kassam Stadium He said: “It’s been a poor start – a tough start with the teams that we have had to play, but we expected that.
“I thought we would do better than we have but we will be looking to put it right as soon as possible.
“The majority of our performances have been very good, the football has been excellent.
“But we have been conceding a lot of bad goals especially from set-plays, which we are working on to put right.”
Oxford have brought in a couple of players before the transfer window closed – Luton Town striker Tom Craddock and Josh Payne from Doncaster Rovers.
He added: “I haven’t taken much notice of the transfer deadline because I have not been involved in it.
“Oxford will be very difficult. They have just come up and are full of beans and will be looking to stay in this division.
“They are at home and will be looking to do well but I know that if we play to our capabilities, we are more than capable of getting a result.”
McIlroy gave some of his fringe players a game on Tuesday but was still disapointed to go out of the Trophy at the first hurdle.
“We played a lot of people who needed games. We made five or six changes and the boys who needed games did very well. We created a lot of chances but then conceded a bad goal.”
