Substitute Adam Rooney denied Simon Grayson a win in his first match as PNE boss at Swindon Town.
The young striker, on loan from Birmingham City, scored with his first touch in the 75th minute after a defensive mistake by David Buchanan.
The North End left-back failed to control a pass and the ball fell into the path of Rooney, who clamly slotted home past the on-rushing Declan Rudd.
North End had earlier taken the lead six minutes into the second half courtesy of Will Hayhurst, on the eve of his 19th birthday.
It was a great move which led to Preston’s goal as Nicky Wroe slipped a nice ball through to Jack King, who released Stuart Beavon down the right.
King then headed down Beavon’s subsequent cross at the back post to Hayhurst, who controlled the ball before smashing into the roof of the net.
North End survived a late onslaught from Town, with Aden Flint coming nearest to grabbing a winner six mintes from time, but his header was superbly saved by Rudd, who made a number of outstanding saves throughout the game.
The game began with the home side in the ascendancy.
They should have taken the lead as early as the 6th minute when Andy Williams got free down the right-hand side. His inviting centre was met with a towering header eight yards out, but his powerful header was superbly beaten away by Rudd.
Two minutes later, Swindon’s Aden Flint directed an header goalwards bt it was easily saved by Rudd.
North End’s first sight on goal arrived in the 18th minute when Lee Holmes found himself with time and space on the right-hand side of the penalty area.
His drilled cross was scrambled away by Flint and the loose ball evaded a number of white shirts who had made their way into the box.
Rudd was called into action once more three minutes later after Pal Huntington conceded a free-kick just outside the area in a dangerous position. However, Gary Roberts subsequent shot lacked power as Rudd gathered comfortably.
Ten minutes later, Swindon had another clear sight on goal, but Williams drove his shot across goal from an angle 12 yards out.
PNE then counter attacked quickly three minutes later after defending a corner.
Will Hayhurst’s clever flick released Holmes, who in turn, found Stuart Beavon.
The striker set Wroe away down the left and the midfielder cut inside and fired wide of the far post from 20-yards.
A nice PNE move shortly before half-time, saw Hayhurst find King on the edge of the area, but his first time shot was deflected away to safety.
After the break, Rudd made a scarmbling save after a Collins shot in the 66th minute and Paul Huntington blocked Collins shot in the area on 80 mintes as Swindon went in search of a winner.
North End continued to battle and always looked dangerous on the counter attack.
