MEET THE BOSS:

Carlos Carvalhal spent the vast majority of his playing career as a central defender for hometown club SC Braga in the Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

He also enjoyed spells with Chaves, Beira-Mar and also played one game for two-time European Cup winners FC Porto.

Now aged 50, Carvalhal took his first managerial role at another former club Espinho. He has managed in Turkey – taking charge of Besiktas for a season in 2010. He was handed the Hillsborough hotseat in the summer and has led the club to a play-off position.

MET THE REF:

Keith Stroud makes his first visit to Deepdale in more than a year on Saturday. The Hampshire official was the man in the middle when North End were denied automatic promotion on the final day of last season when they lost 1-0 at Colchester United.

Preston were embroiled in an epic FA Cup fifth round trilogy against Liverpool. A team containing Alan Kelly Snr and Alan Spavin held the Reds to a goalless draw in front of nearly 55,000 supporters at Anfield. 
In the replay three days later at Deepdale, both sides failed to score once more. The second replay went the way of North End at Old Trafford thanks 
to a goal from Peter Thompson.

40 YEARS AGO:

North End boasted four different goalscorers as they defeated Swindon Town 4-2 at Deepdale in an old Third Division fixture. Alex Bruce, Ray Treacy, John Smith and John Brown.

23 YEARS AGO:

Mick Norbury grabbed the only goal of the game as PNE got the better of Brighton and Hove Albion at Deepdale
