PNE say goodbye to Garner?

JOE Garner is nearing a Preston exit, with Rangers close to finalising a deal to take the striker to Ibrox.

The two clubs have agreed a transfer fee in principle, although talks were continuing today over instalment payments.

But it is likely that Garner has played his last game for PNE – Saturday’s appearance against Fulham was his 151st in club colours.

Even if the deal takes more time to do, the 28-year-old won’t be involved in tonight’s clash with Derby County at Deepdale (7.45pm).

Once the negotiations over the fee are finalised, Garner will travel to Scotland for a medical and to agree personal terms.

Rumours of interest in the front man from Rangers, first surfaced earlier in the summer.

Wigan were also reported to be eyeing him, with North End issuing a ‘hands-off’ warning.

But the speculation started again late last week and the Glaswegians made an official bid on Saturday.

With Garner keen on the move north of the border, the offer was accepted with reluctance by PNE.

Simon Grayson met with the player on Sunday for talks and those discussions continued at the Springfields training ground yesterday morning.

A statement from North End said: “On both Sunday and Monday discussions were held with Joe with regard to this situation.

“Joe has made it clear that the financial considerations in making this move would mean that he would want to leave.

“Assuming a final agreement can be reached with regard to a transfer fee we would not want to stand in the way of a player who no longer wished to remain with us.

“If Joe leaves, he goes with our very best wishes for what he has done in his time here.”

Jermaine Beckford is set to replace Garner tonight.

Beckford made an impact as a substitute against Fulham, setting up Callum Robinson’s goal and having a late effort harshly ruled out for offside.
