George Mutch will forever be in Preston North End folklore after scoring the winner in the 1938 FA Cup final – the last time PNE lifted the trophy. Awarded

a penalty in the last minute of extra-time, Mutch stepped up to take it and scored off the underside of the bar.

It was Mutch who was brought down for the penalty and needed treatment from the trainer before getting up to take it.

Born in Scotland, Mutch joined Manchester United from Arbroath in 1934. He signed for North End in 1937 for £5,000. On the way to the 1938 final, Mutch scored five goals.
