Supporters of Preston North End will get the chance to celebrate the life of the club’s greatest ever player later this year.
The Sir Tom Finney Tribute Dinner will take place on Thursday, June 5, in the Invincibles Lounge at Deepdale, starting at 8pm.
Chief guest speaker during the evening will be celebrated artist and raconteur Paul Trevillion, who will be accompanied on the top table by Finney’s former team-mate – the legendary ex-player and manager Tommy Docherty.
Known as the ‘Leonardo of Line Drawing’, Trevillion could not read or write until he reached the age of 13 – he would just draw everything instead!
Perhaps most famous for being the artist behind ‘Roy of the Rovers’ –the popular football comic character, Trevillion also painted a portrait of former prime minister Winston Churchill while still a schoolboy.
His artwork has featured in almost every national newspaper and he devised a cult classic football strip known as ‘You Are The Ref’, which featured every week in the Observer and Guardian online.
In 2012, it became a permanent interactive exhibit at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
The 80-year-old has drawn some of the biggest names in the sporting world, including Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, George Best, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Sir Alex Ferguson – and, of course, Sir Tom.
Event organiser Jim Cadman said: “Paul Trevillion has paintings and drawings going back 60 years – original artwork which will be on display on the night. He has literally hundreds and hundreds of drawings
“In fact, one of his first jobs was to do a drawing of Sir Tom for the 1954 FA Cup final.”
Tables for the event are priced at £500 for a table of 10, with individual tickets costing £55.
The gold star package, which includes a champagne reception with Trevillion and a limited edition Sir Tom Finney rossette, are available at £700 for a table of 10. Individual tickets cost £75.
Cadman added: “We have just had confirmation that the FA will be bringing a table of 10 and they will also be donating an England shirt signed by all the current squad, which will be auctioned.”
All the profits from this evening will go towards the Sir Tom Finney Preston Soccer Centre.
Tickets are in demand and there are only around 140 left.
“Tickets are selling nicely,” Cadman added. For further information call Jim Cadman on 07971 624627 or 01562 887323.
