Striker Jon Macken was one of three players to join Preston from Manchester United in the summer of 1997, Colin Murdock and Michael Appleton.

After a slow start to his time at North End, he emerged as a key figure in the forward line over the next few season. Macken was in the 1999/2000 Second Division title winning side, finishing as top scorer with 25 goals.

He topped the Deepdale goalscoring charts the following season as PNE reached the play-off final.

Macken was to depart in March 2002, sold to Manchester City for a then club record fee of £5m.
He never properly settled at City.
