Makienok spent last season on loan with North End from Italian club Palermo.

This summer he joined FC Utrecht on a three-year deal and he suffered the knee injury during a training session with the Dutch club on Wednesday.

The Danish striker posted on his Instagram account: "I'm going to be out of the game for a while.

"After some very difficult years on and off the pitch, this was going to be my year - best shape and feeling for years.

"But now all that is gone with an ACL injury in my knee. I'm completely gutted at the moment.

"Make no mistake I'll be back stronger."

Makienok scored six goals in his season with North End, including a hat-trick in the EFL Cup against Bournemouth.

He found the net in the Championship games at Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.
