NORTH END:

Chris Maxwell 7

Had one effort to deal with, diving to save Joseph Mendes’ first-half header. His goal kick started the move for the winning goal.

Darnell Fisher 7

Another good game from the right-back, with him getting forward when the chance allowed as well as doing his defensive duties.

Paul Huntington 8

Wore the captain’s armband and took on that responsibility very well. A strong performance at the back.

Ben Davies 8

Very assured display in what was only his second start in the Championship. Looked comfortable next to Huntington.

Josh Earl 8

An eye-catching senior debut at left-back for the 18-year-old. Got into the game early and coped well with Modou Barrow.

Ben Pearson 7

Usual no-nonense, high octane stuff from the midfielder. Handled himself well after an early yellow card and kept his composure.

Daniel Johnson 8

DJ is thriving in Alex Neil’s new set-up and his passing range was excellent. He prompted many of PNE’s attacks.

Sean Maguire 8

Played on the right of the attack and gave the Reading defence problems all afternoon. His header played in Hugill for the winner.

J0sh Harrop 7

His first start for Preston and a decent one at that. His early use of the ball was a bit wayward but settled down well after that.

Tom Barkhuizen 7

His best display so far this season, getting far more into the game. His shooting needed a bit of polish but his cross for the goal was spot-on.

Jordan Hugill 8

Scored the winner, taking the ball on his chest and volleying home. Superb work rate in leading the line, held the ball up so well.

Subs used: Alan Browne 7

Joined the action in the 72nd minute in place of Harrop as PNE looked to firm up midfield. Set up Mavididi for a late chance.

Callum Robinson 6

Replaced Barkhuizen with five minutes to go, some added pace to try and exploit the gaps as Reading pushed forward.

Stephy Mavididi 6

Introduced in the 88th minute for Maguire, should have scored in stoppage-time when he was put clear on goal.
