Preston North End striker Joe Garner was a double winner at the North West Football Awards in Manchester on Tuesday night.

Garner was voted League One player of the year having become one of the prolific scorers in the division over the last 12 months.

His spectacular volley in the play-off semi-final clash against Rotherham at Deepdale was named as goal of the year – beating off competition from efforts by Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez, Yaya Toure, Ross Barkley and Ashley Barnes.

North End midfielder Josh Brownhill was shortlisted in the rising star category but that award went to Manchester City youngster Rony Lopes.
