An unstoppable Chris Humphrey fired Preston North End to a 4-0 victory over Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.
Wing wizard Humphrey set up the first two goals and all but sealed the clash in the 47th minute with a slick solo strike.
Last season’s top scorer and former Iron loanee Joe Garner opened the scoring after coolly controlling, turning and thumping Humphrey’s fierce right wing cross beyond the Iron’s rookie keeper James Severn.
Scunthorpe centre back Miguel Llera diverted another fizzing Humphrey cross into his own net in the 37th minute.
Humphrey added a third two minutes after the restart as he latched on a slick Calum Woods pass. The Jamaica international stormed down the right wing into the box before cutting inside and firing home.
Josh Brownhill and Garner put the icing on the cake as some slick link-up play led to yet another Garner goal.
Garner released Brownhill on the right, the forward drifted towards the far post and Brownhill’s pin-point pass allowed the striker to rise up and head the ball back across Severn and seal victory.
Garner returned to North End’s starting XI after missing the 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Rochdale due to a slight knee injury.
The striker bagged PNE’s first goal of the new League One campaign in North End’s opening day 1-1 draw with Notts County last Saturday and added another two against the Iron.
Andy Little did not figure in today’s clash at Glanford Park after picking up a minor injury in the Rochdale match but his replacement Humphrey stole the show.
PNE boss Simon Grayson chose a 4-3-3 formation with Humphrey and Paul Gallagher either side of Garner up front.
Scunthorpe made one change to the side that beat Blackburn Rovers 1-0 in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday - goalkeeper Sam Slocombe picked up a slight injury in that match and Severn made his first league start for the Iron in goal.
Scunthorpe stared lively and nearly took the lead as Madden’s right footed shot from just outside the area beat PNE keeper Jamie Jones and crashed into the bar in the fourth minute.
Jennison Myrie Williams’s long range rocket stung the Jones’ palms as he plucked the fierce shot from the Iron man out of the air in the seventh minute.
But PNE took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to some fast footwork by Humphrey. The Jamaica international danced down the right wing beat his man and whipped the ball into the path of Garner.
The striker chested the ball down before spinning and smashing the ball past Scunny goalkeeper Severn from eight yards out.
Bailey Wright nearly doubled North End’s lead as he latched on to Paul Gallagher’s corner at the near post. Wright’s header flew through a sea of bodies, touched a couple of Scunny heads before kissing the far post and flying to safety in the 21st minute.
And another fine cross by Humphrey was headed over the bar by Alan Browne who had sprinted into the box but could not keep his headed effort down in the 29th minute.
Gallagher stole into the left hand side of the box after Neil Kilkenny’s fine pass, the Scot picked out Garner but the striker’s diving header was blocked by Llera in the 35th minute.
And seconds later Tom Clarke’s thunderous header from the resulting corner just flew over the bar.
And PNE doubled their lead in the 37th minute as Humphrey latched on to Browne’s pin point pass on the right hand side of the box.
Humphrey timed his run to perfection before smashing the ball into the danger area and Llera accidentally spun the ball past his helpless team mate Severn.
And Humphrey added to his two earlier assists by bagging a fine solo goal in the 47th minute. He latched onto a Calum Woods pass and stormed down the right before cutting inside.
The Jamaican coolly picked his spot and blasted the ball across Severn into the far corner of goal.
But Scunny fought back as Myrie-Williams’s header crashed into Jones’ right-hand post in the 55th minute. The ball bounced into the path of Madden but he smashed the ball over the bar.
Garner bounded towards goal in the 60th minute and unleashed the trigger when he hit the top of the penalty box but his fierce low strike flew straight into the arms of Severn.
Brownhill’s shot just trickled wide of the far post in the 77th minute.
And PNE added a fourth after some slick link-up play between Brownhill and Garner in the 82nd minute.
Garner teed up Brownhill in space on the right and the youngster smashed the ball back towards Garner who had drifted away from his marker at the far post.
Garner leapt through the air and powerfully headed the ball beyond Severn to bag his third goal of the season.
