58 years ago: North End were embroiled in a fascinating FA Cup fifth-round trilogy against Bolton Wanderers and they also faced the Trotters in a league encounter too. In total the two teams met four times in the space of nine days. Unfortunately for PNE, after 2-2 and 1-1 draws at Burnden Park and Deepdale respectively, it was Bolton who prevailed in the FA Cup, 2-1 in the second replay. The Trotters also collected the three points on offer by winning the First Division encounter 2-1. Les Campbell was the goalscorer for PNE.
