He was previously on the club’s coaching staff as fitness coach and made more than 250 appearances for the Millers as a player. Warne also served Wigan, Oldham, Yeovil and Mansfield in his playing days. Despite the Millers being relegated after a wretched season, Warne has been entrusted with the task of getting the Yorkshire outfit back to the Championship.

MEET THE REF: Robert Jones

After being refereed by the usual suspects all season, there is a new man with the whistle for Preston’s game against Rotherham. This is Mr Jones’ first season on the Football League’s list and the Deepdale clash is only the second Championship match he has taken charge of – the first was Barnsley’s draw with Brentford on Easter Monday.

The Merseyside official has taken charge of 39 games this season, showing 119 yellow cards and just four red.

THIS WEEK...

30 years ago: On April 25, 1987, North End’s 2-1 win over Orient at Brisbane Road saw them clinch promotion from the Fourth Division. Goals from Gary Brazil and Les Chapman gave them the victory in East London, to the delight of more than 2,000 travelling fans. It was a triumph for a squad put together at a cost of just £15,000.

26 years ago: Preston beat Hartlepool 2-0 at the Victoria Ground to win the Third Division title on April 27, 1996. On target with the goals for Gary Peters’ men were Simon Davey and Andy Saville.

17 years: Despite a 2-0 defeat at Cambridge on April 24, 2000, PNE were confirmed as Second Division champions. They were presented with the trophy on April 29 after a 3-2 victory over Millwall at Deepdale.
