The Lilywhites have taken only five points from their first eight Championship games and have not won in the league since the opening day.

Although Browne has seen dips in results before during his five seasons at Deepdale, the current form is ringing more alarm bells.

The fixture list offers little comfort, with Saturday’s trip to Sheffield United followed in the league by games against West Bromwich, Aston Villa and Wigan.

Thrown into the mix too is a League Cup tie with Middlesbrough.

“We haven’t really had any runs like this,” said Browne.

“We’ve had our downs and usually we hit back the next game or after a couple of games.

“It is difficult and we aren’t used to it.

“We aren’t giving the fans their money’s worth.

“Even if a result doesn’t go your way, you can still have a good performance.

“Performances and results haven’t happened for us – it is about time we changed that.

“The league is different this season, it is more challenging with new teams in.

“We have been really poor both collectively and individually, the results have shown that.

“Last season we had a few poor games but still ground out results. Other games we dominated.

“This season we haven’t seen any of that, the fans have a right to be frustrated and disappointed – they’ve every right to voice their opinion.”

Browne was back in the side for Tuesday 3-0 defeat at Leeds after a calf strain kept him out of the Reading loss.

His return was earlier than anticipated but needs-must.

Said Browne: “I wanted to be out there, I wanted to play.

“If we were doing well I would probably leave it a week but because we are struggling I wanted to get back as quickly as I could. I’ll admit I wasn’t good enough at Leeds.”
