NEIL MELLOR COLUMN

Preston North End are four games into pre-season, and let’s be honest, it hasn’t started too well from a results point of view yet.

It’s fair to say the opposition will be much stronger and tougher to beat when the League One season begins.

The teams North End have met already are, with all due respect to them, teams they should be beating comfortably even at this early stage of pre-season.

The results are a concern but also the lack of goals.

There is still no sign of Iain Hume wearing a PNE shirt this season and with quality like that not involved, it’s starting to get to the point of asking why isn’t he involved?

As I’ve mentioned before, I got to play with Humey last season and got to see what a great player he was.

He’s a great lad in the changing room who always enjoyed a laugh but knew the importance of doing things right to get the result.

Having said all that, the season is still a good few weeks away and there is still plenty of time to put it right so it all falls into place for when it matters against Colchester on August 18 at Deepdale.

During the summer, my mind was always focused on the opening game of the season and I was only ever worried about that – not by my form or results in pre-season.

Look at last year, I only scored once in pre-season and yet, by the start of October, I already had eight goals in about 10 games.

No one can be judged on pre-season results so I think whilst we are all disappointed with how it has begun, we should be patient and back the club when it starts for real.
