Nicholls leaves with head held high
Preston North End boss Alan Irvine says former skipper Kevin Nicholls has left Deepdale with his head held high.
And Irvine wishes him nothing but luck after Nicholls ended his nightmare stay at PNE by linking up with crisis-club Luton Town.
North End have paid up Nicholl's contract just 14 months after a 750,000 switch from Leeds United.
He featured as a second-half sub for his old club in the Hatters' 3-0 friendly defeat to Brighton at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.
Nicholls was handed the captaincy by Paul Simpson after the shock
departure of Graham Alexander to Burnley, but made just 18 starts in all competitions and was plagued by injury and loss of form as North End fought a relegation battle.
Don't miss our 16-page PNE pull-out in. Only in Monday's Lancashire Evening Post.
Irvine said: "Kevin knew it was probably time to move on and he was a bit unfortunate in some respects.
"When I took over he was Preston's captain, but having a few problems with his own form.
"He came to see me and asked to give the captaincy to somebody else.
"I did that, but it was a brave decision by Kevin.
"It takes a lot of courage to come out and say something like that.
Then he got injured and unfortunately for him we moved on.
"He had a couple of new injuries this year, and then he missed the whole of pre-season.
"He has been a very good professional and he has not caused any problems whatsoever. We wish him well."
