PNE need to find a new Nugent

Mark Lawrenson insists Preston will be forced to raid football's bargain basement again to unearth the next David Nugent.

The former Deepdale defender and BBC Match of the Day pundit says it is becoming increasingly difficult for clubs with PNE's limited resources to compete at the higher end of the transfer market.

"If you think about David Nugent coming from Bury and Sean St Ledger from Peterborough, we took a risk on them," said Lawrenson.

"However, they're the kind of players that Preston have got to go out and buy because they don't have the money to sign a 5m cheque for a new striker.

"We can't shop at Harrods – we're more at Lidl."

Lawrenson expects Preston to use the loan market too.

"I think that is another option for Preston, and an important one," said Lawrenson.

"We could get one or two loan players in from the top clubs.

"There's some tremendous talent, and maybe a Fraizer Campbell of two years ago – those are the players we should try to get.

"The only problem is every Championship club is trying to get the same players.

"It's a financial fact of life that Preston will sometimes have to sell one of their best players to balance the books, but I think Derek Shaw manages the club in a very sensible fashion.

"We played above ourselves for most of the season and we're arguably looking at having to do that again this season."
