Players 'feeling good' - Irvine

Boss Alan Irvine says confidence is on the up in the Preston North End camp after Saturday's impressive victory.

The 2-0 home defeat of Bristol City has propelled Preston into sixth place.

He admitted: "The lads are feeling good about themselves.

"We were up against a good team who have the fourth-best away record in the league. We knew we would have to be right defensively and hopefully that would provide a platform for us."

Irvine's action plans were dented when Neil Mellor had to go off injured, having collided with the advertising hoardings but Stephen Elliott's goal at least provided a silver lining.

The manager said: "Mells had a gash on the shin from hitting against the boards. He jarred his hip. I hope it's nothing serious.

"I'm delighted for Steve, who has done really well. His goal return is good.

"His movement for the first goal was excellent. People see the finish, but don't often see the movement to get there. It must have been about his first touch."

Bristol boss Gary Johnson admitted his disappointment when he said: "It's not quite going for us at the moment. Once again we have created two or three chances and didn't take them."
