Oldham duo give Flitcroft a booster

Young gun: Kirk Millar

Young gun: Kirk Millar

Chorley boss Garry Flitcroft has moved to combat a growing injury crisis by signing highly-rated Oldham Athletic duo David Mellor and Kirk Millar.

Both joined the Magpies on initial one-month loan deals and went straight into Flitcroft’s squad for last night’s 4-1 NPL Premier Division defeat at home to AFC Fylde.

Ciaran Kilheeney’s 23rd-minute penalty put the Magpies in front but a second-half onslaught – including a hat-trick from Fylde’s Adam Farrell – saw Flitcroft’s men slip to defeat.

So the arrival of the Latics’ loanees comes just in time.

The players have impressive pedigrees, having already appeared in Oldham’s first team.

Mellor, a left-sided defender or midfielder, joined the Latics as a 16-year-old from Manchester United.

After spending time in Oldham’s youth team he made his competitive debut last season as a substitute in a League Cup match against Carlisle United.

He went on to score 16 minutes into his Football League debut against Scunthorpe and was reportedly the subject of a £300,000 bid from Fulham 12 months ago.

Millar, a 20-year-old winger or striker, is a product of Oldham’s Centre of Excellence and made his first team debut for the Latics aged 16.

He has made a total of 16 first-team appearances to date and has also been capped at Under 21 level by Northern Ireland.

Flitcroft said. “I’d like to thank the Oldham boss Paul Dickov for giving us permission to bring in David and Kirk.

“Due to injuries and suspensions our squad is down to the bare bones at the moment so these two signings will give us a lift.

“Both lads have great quality and this is a good opportunity for them to show what they can do.”

Meanwhile, former Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers star Steve Kindon is the guest speaker at Chorley’s annual sportsmans’ dinner next month.

One of the best after-dinner speakers on the circuit, Kindon will be appearing at Victory Park Social Club on Friday, November 16.

Top comedian Jimmy Bright is also on the bill and the night will feature a three-course meal and a charity auction.

Flitcroft said: “This is the latest in a series of fundraising initiatives by the club and it promises to be a top night of entertainment.

“Anyone who has seen Steve before will tell you he’s one of the best around.”

Tickets for the event cost £35 and there are discounts available for tables of 10.

All funds raised on the night will be donated to the club.
