Striker to attract renewed interest

Aston Villa are expected to renew interest in Wigan Athletic's England striker Emile Heskey when the transfer window reopens in January.

Villa had a 6m offer for Heskey turned down by Wigan on transfer deadline day earlier this season.

The England striker, who is currently sidelined with another hamstring injury is still on Martin O'Neill's wanted list.

Wigan could be tempted to cash in on Heskey, who is out of contract at the end of the season. It is believed Wigan will accept 4m for the 30-year-old.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has already checked out Ecuador striker Cristian Benitez as a replacement.

Latics are hoping to have Heskey back for next Monday's home game with Everton.

Amr Zaki is also expected to be back after missing the Newcastle match with injury.Zaki underwent hospital tests last week for both rib and calf injuries. The Egyptian has told Cairo sources he has been lacking full fitness in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Spurs are the latest Premiership club linked with the striker. He will complete the season on loan at Wigan but his club Zamalek will then listen to offers from the highest bidder. Bruce has admitted Wigan will struggle to compete with rival offers.

Skipper Mario Melchiot is also under treatment for a muscle problem within his knee.
