Shrimps on the up after festive haul
The price is right: Jason Price has signed an extended deal with the Shrimps
Jim Bentley hopes that his Morecambe side have turned the corner after their last two results.
The Shrimps got 2012 off to the perfect start with a 1-0 win at Crewe on Monday, their first victory since the end of October.
On New Year’s Eve, they had drawn 2-2 with Burton Albion, and Bentley was content with that four-point haul.
Tomorrow, Morecambe are back at the Globe Arena to host struggling Northampton Town (3pm).
The Cobblers have fallen into the League Two relegation zone after a miserable 14-game winless run.
Bentley said: “Hopefully we’ve turned the corner with four points from two games.
“Now we’ve got to make sure that we go out bubbling tomorrow and get the crowd behind us.
“We want a good performance at home and hopefully three more points.
“I was happy with what we did at Crewe earlier in the week.
“Crewe went into the game off the back of a good win, while we had been a little bit indifferent.
“But we couldn’t afford to feel sorry for ourselves, and we put in a good performance.We limited Crewe to going ‘long ball’ for the last five minutes.
“On another day we could have scored more than the one goal we did.
“We hit the bar and post, had a couple disallowed, and had some other chances.
“With the Crewe game coming just 48 hours after playing Burton, we made five changes, with just one of those enforced.
“It was a brave decision but I have a squad I believe in and it was good to freshen things up.
“Maybe we looked a bit jaded to start with, but once we got the goal, we went from there.”
Kevin Ellison netted the winner at Crewe with his 10th goal of the season since a summer Bosman move from Rotherham.
The striker is one of three Shrimps players to sign new contracts in the past few days.
Ellison has agreed a deal to stay at Morecambe next season, with defender Chris McCready penning a new two-year contract.
And Jason Price will now stay for the remainder of the campaign. The striker’s contract had been due to run out on Tuesday.
Said Bentley: “Jason has done well for us and I’m really pleased to see him stay on.
“He is a great lad to have around the dressing room and is someone who works tremendously hard for others.”
Price, 34, joined Morecambe in September after a short stint with Barnet, and has netted twice.
The Welshman said: “There is a great team spirit here and this is a club going in the right direction.”
Tomorrow’s opponents Northampton are now under the stewardship of former Watford, Colchester and Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd.
He is yet to taste victory in his month in charge but the Cobblers drew 1-1 at play-off chasing Shrewsbury this week, and Boothroyd thinks a win isn’t far away.
