Defender rocks club with plea to rivals - report

A round-up of all the top sports stories in Wednesday's national newspapers, with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Jose Mourinho, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and West Ham United in the headlines.

THE SUN: Steven Gerrard helped send Real Madrid crashing to a record Euro defeat and roared: We were absolutely awesome. Manchester City star Pablo Zabaleta is out to catch the eye of Diego Maradona - despite being snubbed by him last year. Defender Sebastien Bassong has rocked Newcastle with a 'come and get me plea' to Arsenal. West Ham's Valon Behrami is out of action for six months. Also: England's bid to grab a dramatic Fifth Test triumph yesterday ended in frustration.

DAILY STAR: Two-goal Steven Gerrard inspired another famous Anfield success for Liverpool last night. Also: Sir Alex Ferguson last night told Jose Mourinho: I'm not worried about you, but you should worry about Manchester United.

DAILY MIRROR: Liverpool strode majestically into the quarter-final of the Champions League with a stunning Anfield victory last night. Also: Didier Drogba's renaissance continued last night with the goal that sent Chelsea through to the last eight of the Champions League. Liverpool and Chelsea target Simon Kjaer, the Danish centre-back, could be a step closer to the Premier League.

DAILY EXPRESS: Steven Gerrard marked his 100th appearance in Europe with two goals as Liverpool thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 in a stunning display at Anfield. Also: England were left frustrated and beaten in the Caribbean after another desperate rearguard action by the West Indies batsmen.

DAILY MAIL: Steven Gerrard rammed Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos's taunts back down his throat as Liverpool marched imperiously into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-0 win at Anfield. Also: When Chelsea's players christened Michael Essien 'The Train' their reasons clearly went beyond that awesome combination of pace and power.

THE TIMES: Liverpool's love affair with European football continued at an electric Anfield last night when Rafael Benitez's team humiliated Real Madrid to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the fourth time in five seasons.

THE GUARDIAN: The comprehensive victory here made Anfield glow as it had not done since the defeat of Manchester United. This display will make the opposition in the quarter-finals dread coming here and they should be wary of Liverpool at their own ground.

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH: England's bowlers have become used to being thwarted in this Test series and it happened again in Port of Spain yesterday after West Indies clung on by two wickets for the draw that gives them their first series win for six years against proper opposition.

THE INDEPENDENT: A Test match and series which had frequently been notable for sheer, mind-numbing tedium ended in high drama last night. For the second time in three weeks England were denied by a gallant West Indies rearguard action.
