Morecambe’s hopes of picking up a valuable point at Shrewsbury were dashed by a late goal from former Fleetwood striker Andy Mangan.

Jim Bentley’s side had defended heroically against the side with one of the best home records in the Football League.

But they were eventually undone seven minutes from time by a poacher’s goal from the Shrews’ substitute who was perfectly placed to score from close range after Scott Davies had saved superbly from James Collins’s shot.

Davies had looked unbeatable with a string of brilliant stops throughout the game and when the home side also hit the woodwork on two occasions.

It looked as though Morecambe were set to continue their good run of form against the league’s top sides especially when they went close to securing a dramatic point in injury time when Mark Ellis diverted Padraig Amond’s pass inches wide of his own post.

The Shrimps started superbly and almost shocked the Shrews with an early goal.

With six minutes played young striker Paul Mullin received the ball with his back to goal inside the Shrewsbury box but turned sharply and curled an effort inches wide of the left hand post.

The home side then enjoyed a period of dominance with Blackpool loanee Bobby Grant being denied a run on goal by the first of many fine saves from Davies.

The Shrews’ midfielder hit the post just after the half hour with a curler from just inside the area.

Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro headed a right wing cross inches wide before prolific striker James Collins tested Davis with a header from close range.

Collins then drilled a shot from 25 yards just over before Grant went close again.

After a period on the back foot Morecambe ended the half on top with Mullin having another golden chance to open the scoring after latching on to a poor back pass from Nathaniel Knight-Percival but his shot was superbly saved by keeper Jan Leutwiler low to his left.
