Morecambe’s September slump continued as they suffered their first home defeat of the season against Northampton Town.

Jim Bentley’s side went down 1-0 for the third successive game with another below par performance from the early season pace makers.

In a game of few clear cut chances Northampton, who conceded five goals against Accrington Stanley a week earlier, always looked the more threatening.

And they were handed the points by a rare mistake from Morecambe keeper Barry Roche just after the half hour, After a deep ball into the Morecambe box was only half cleared Roche raced from his goal to collect but got nowhere near the ball and Ivan Toney bundled the ball into the empty goal from eight yards out.

The Shrimps were largely on the back foot in a poor first half.

Northampton dominated the early stages with Toney and Ryan Watson both testing Roche from distance in the opening two minutes of the game.

Toney was close to turning home an excellent right wing cross from Lawson D’Ath before the best chance of the first half on 29 minutes. Chris Hackett swung in a corner which was met by Kaid Mohamed but his close range volley was superbly saved by Roche.

Morecambe’s only first half attack of note came when Jack Redshaw raced into the box only to see his run ended by a collision that lead to shouts for a penalty.

The Shrimps were much better in the second half with Padraig Amond heading a Shaun Beeley cross just wide and Andy Fleming forcing Jordan Archer into his first save of note with a shot from the right hand side of the box.

Morecambe’s best chance fell to substitute Paul Mullin who ran on goal superbly but then disappointingly dragged his final shot wide.

In the final stages Archer made a fine save from a looping Alan Goodall header before a last minute gap opened up for Redshaw but his first touch was poor and the chance went begging.
