Morecambe slide down the League Two table continued with a second defeat of the season against Rochdale.

Jim Bentley’s side produced an improved display and took the lead on the half hour mark but they were twice undone by swift Rochdale counter attacks and suffered to their seventh away defeat of the season.

The game started with both sides exchanging chances.

Morecambe’s Andy Fleming fired wide after just eight seconds and Dale’s danger man Scott Hogan drilled an early shot over.

With both sides playing some attractive football the Shrimps took the lead on 32 minutes. Robbie Threlfall played in a clever ball down the left hand side which found Andy Wright.

His first touch was excellent and gave him the opportunity to cross to the unmarked Jack Redshaw who scored from three yards out.

Unfortunately the lead lasted just two minutes as Rochdale hit back on their next attack.

A Morecambe break broke down and a long ball found the in-form Hogan who outmuscled Andy Parrish before curling a right footed effort into the top left hand corner of Barry Roche’s goal.

The second half saw the Shrimps start well with Kevin Ellison failing to make the most of a good opening before the home side hit back with Ian Henderson forcing a good save from Barry Roche after a smart counter attack.

The Shrimps then enjoyed their best period of the game with the excellent Jamie Devitt causing the home side problems.

Twice the on loan Chesterfield man delivered superb low crosses which were just too far ahead of Ellison and Andy Wright before the wide man saw a superb curling free kick cleared off the line by Matt Done.

Rochdale then hit back with Hogan wasting a glorious chance after being found in space at the back post by Henderson.

But a minute later the home side scored the winner with a freak goal when Parrish’s sliding clearance rebounded off Henderson and the ball flew into the bottom left hand corner of Roche’s goal.

The Shrimps piled bodies looking to grab a leveller but the Rochdale defence held firm as Keith Hill’s side maintained their play off push.
