Morecambe produced the shock of the day in League Two as they beat top side Port Vale to secure their third win in four games.
Lewis Alessandra scored the only goal of the day just after the hour to give Jim Bentley’s side their best away win of the season and lift them to 10th in the table in dramatic fashion.
Alessandra made the most of a mistake from former North End keeper Chris Neal who dropped a Gary McDonald cross into the path of the striker who made no mistake from six yards out.
From there it was all Port Vale with Morecambe’s cause made even more difficult when they were reduced to 10 men when Andy Wright handed a red card for a second yellow 18 minutes from time. After being booked in the first half Wright blocked off Ashley Vincent’s run down the right and he received his marching orders.
The Valiants then bombarded the Morecambe goal with the league’s top scorer Tom Pope seeing a header cleared off the line by Donald and Morecambe keeper Barry Roche forced into a string of fine saves as the home side threw everything at the Shrimps.
Port Vale’s impressive left back Daniel Jones went close with two long range efforts that flew narrowly wide of Roche’s goal. Doug Loft and Jennison Myrie-Williams also went close as the Shrimps’ defenders worked overtime to maintain their clean sheet.
The game started with Port Vale quickly on the attack and Ryan Burge tested Roche in the first minute of the game after a free flowing move.
After that early scare Morecambe settled into the game and matched the home side. Wright forced Neal into a save after a quickly taken corner before Jim Bentley’s side produced the the best chance of the first half when McDonald again provided the danger down the left with a cross to the far post which Kevin Ellison diverted wide at full stretch with Neal stranded.
The home side continued to enjoy the majority of the possession but Morecambe hung on for a memorable win.
