Morecambe suffered their heaviest defeat of the season after a poor performance at Plymouth.

Old boy Lewis Alessandra came back to haunt his former club with two goals as Morecambe’s hunt for their first victory in 2014 continues.

Ironically the Shrimps started the game the better and had two chances to open the scoring in the first two minutes of the game.

Jack Sampson headed weakly at Jake Cole from a Jack Redshaw cross in the opening seconds and a Redshaw cross was deflected away from the unmarked Stewart Drummond moments later.

But that early promise came to a quick end as the home side took the lead in only the fifth minute.

Matt Parsons cut in from the left hand side and although Morecambe keeper Barry Roche saved his effort he could only palm the ball into the path of Durrell Berry who stroked the ball past the Morecambe keeper from eight yards.

Plymouth could have added a second two minutes later when Curtis Nelson headed over from Luke Young’s cross before Morecambe had a chance themselves with Alex Kenyon shooting straight at Jake Cole from the edge of the area and the same player testing the home keeper with a flick header.

Hopes of a comeback before half time were dashed as the Shrimps conceded a sloppy second on 39 minutes.

The shaky Shaun Beeley was robbed of possession on the halfway line by Connor Hourihame and the ball found Alessandra who produced a smart finish to beat Roche.

Sampson missed an early second half chance for the Shrimps and Plymouth hit back with Roche saving superbly from Tyler Harvey and Hourihane before Nelson scored with a free header from Luke Young’s right wing corner on 74th minute.

The home side didn’t stop there and were denied a fourth by a fine Roche save from Tyler Harvey.

But two extra goals followed with Andres Gurrieri scored a fourth for the home side on 87 minutes when he got the finishing touch to a Harvey cross before Alessandra compounded the misery with a fifth in injury time.
