The Shrimps moved a step closer to Football League safety with a battling draw against Northampton.

Once again the Shrimps had to come from behind to earn a well earned point against a side fighting for their League Two existence.

Padraig Amond was the Shrimps’ hero with a superb team goal to come back after a freak 44th-minute Andy Wright own goal gave the visitors the lead.

Jim Bentley’s Morecambe, who included new loan signing Ryan Edwards in their side, made a slick start with Alex Kenyon missing an early chance and Kevin Ellison drilling a shot wide.

Then Amond was denied by a post after running on goal and curling a shot past Matt Duke.

Jack Sampson skewed a shot wide and Amond was denied by an excellent block from Duke, who raced out of his goal to thwart the Morecambe striker.

But with the Shrimps on top, they went a goal down a minute before the break to a bizarre own goal when Wright diverted an Emile Sinclair cross past his own goalkeeper and into the net.

Morecambe looked to reply quickly in the second half, Jamie Devitt lofting an early shot onto the roof of the Northampton net before visiting keeper Matt Duke produced one of the saves of the season to block a well struck Kevin Ellison free-kick.

Northampton then took the upper hand without really threatening the Morecambe goal, as Gary Deegan and former North End midfielder Darren Carter went close.

But the Shrimps secured the point with one of their best team goals of the season.

Devitt found Jack Redshaw and his smart first-time flick played in Amond, who produced a fine finish to beat Duke from 12 yards out.

Both sides went all out to claim victory, with Northampton’s Ian Morris being denied by a goalline clearance after a goalmouth scramble.

Morecambe then went close themselves when Devitt ran through on goal and lofted the ball over the onrushing Duke, only to see his effort creep inches wide of the right-hand post as both teams had to settle for the point.
