Morecambe produced another fine away performance to put a dent into Gareth Ainsworth’s promotion hopes.

A win for Ainsworth’s Wycombe would have put them in pole position to gain automatic promotion to League One but a late Paul Mullin goal gave Morecambe their first ever victory over the Chairboys to spoil the party.

Substitute Mullin continued his recent scoring form with the only goal of the game four minutes from time. Kevin Ellison delivered a cross from the right to the far post and Mullin was unmarked to head past Matt Ingram from close range.

Had it not been for a stunning individual performance from Ingram the Shrimps could have won the game by a much greater margin.

His best came from an Alex Kenyon flick header on 70 minutes and he followed that up with more great saves from Ellison and Padraig Amond before somehow tipping away a close range Mark Hughes header.

Wycombe started the game brightly and young striker Fred Onyedimna had a good chance to open the scoring on five minutes when he ran on to a deep cross from Sam Wood but headed straight at Andreas Arestidou.

The home side went close again on 13 minutes when former Accrington Stanley midfielder Peter Murphy flashed a half volley inches wide of the right hand post from the edge of the area.

Morecambe gradually began to force their way into the game with Hughes testing Ingram with a back post header from a well worked corner. And It was the Shrimps who had the best chance of the half when Aaron Wildig played in Jack Redshaw but the striker could only shoot straight at Ingram when he should have done much better.

Wycombe started the second half on the front foot with Alfie Mawson seeing a header cleared off the line by a crowd of Morecambe defenders but Shrimps boss Jim Bentley brought on Amond and Mullin and changed his system.

It was a change that worked perfectly as Wildig and Jamie Devitt began to dominate the midfield and create a catalogue of chances before Mullin earned the points with his eighth goal of the season.
