Morecambe’s hopes of a third successive home win were dashed by struggling Dagenham and Redbridge in a 2-1 defeat.
The league’s bottom club picked up a deserved three points against a Morecambe side who produced possibly their worst performance of the season.
Hopes were high before the game after a four match unbeaten run, but from the start the Shrimps were second best.
It came as no surprise when Morecambe went a goal down on 12 minutes with an excellent strike from Daggers’ midfielder Medy Elito.
The Shrimps’ defence had cleared a corner to the edge of the box but Elito curled it past Barry Roche’s left hand.
Dagenham then went close to a second six minutes later when Reeves moved on to another loose ball and drilled a shot inches wide of the left hand post.
After a poor start the Shrimps fired their way back into the game with their first attack of any note on 26 minutes.
Garry Hunter chipped the ball to the edge of the Dagenham box, Jordan Burrow headed down and the Shrimps’ top scorer Kevin Ellison curled a great right foot finish past John Bond from the edge of the area.
The goal gave the home crowd a lift but the Shrimps failed to respond as both sides struggled to keep possession. Chances were rare, but the best openings fell to the visitors and on 42 minutes Mark Arber flashed a shot wide from the left hand side of the box after Roche had failed to clear a Damien McCrory corner.
Arber then went close in the second half with a header from a Matthew Saunders corner that was cleared off the line after Michael Spillane had forced Roche into a fine save.
It was Josh Scott who provided the killer blow when he scored the winner 18 minutes from time. The man who inspired Dagenham’s play-off win over the Shrimps two seasons ago beat Chris McCready to a right wing cross to steer a fine header past Roche and take the points.
