The Shrimps maintained their magnificent start to the League Two season with a fourth successive win, 2-1 at Cambridge United.

Two goals from Paul Mullin on his first ever league start ensured Morecambe remain the only Football League side with a 100 per cent record.

But while it was Mullin who took the headlines, it was the performance of goalkeeper Barry Roche that inspired the Shrimps as a string of fine saves denied the home side.

After a sloppy opening that saw Roche save from Harrison Tunk after just 10 seconds, the Shrimps struck first when Mullin nipped in between two defenders to head home Kevin Ellison’s superb cross from the left.

Morecambe were forced to defend for long periods, with the dangerous Kwesi Appiah forcing Roche into a flying save from a powerful header from Ryan Donaldson’s corner just after the half-hour.

Ellison tried his luck with a long-range effort that flew straight at United keeper Chris Dunn soon after.

But Roche again denied Appiah just before half-time by making a fine stop from the Cambrdge striker’s shot on the turn.

The home side began the second half brightly and pulled a goal back when Tom Elliott headed home from close range after he reacted quickest to run on to Stewart Drummond’s miscued clearance.

Five minutes later, Morecambe regained the lead with Mullin again on the mark.

After a fine move Andy Wright crossed from the right and Mullin, having just ran back on to the pitch following treatment for a cut head, put the visitors back in front with a cool finish to take his tally to the season to three.

The home side then piled on the pressure with the Shrimps forced to defend bravely with a further head injury to young defender Chris Doyle followed by a worrying injury to Laurence Wilson.

Elliott had the best chance to level the game for Cambridge, heading over from close range.
