Morecambe picked up their first win in four games to maintain an unbeaten Football League record over Phil Brown’s Southend.
Jack Redshaw gave the Shrimps their eighth win in nine games against the former Preston boss’ in-form side, who were looking for a fifth successive victory in League Two.
Redshaw struck in only the fourth minute of the game with a goal of pure quality.
After going three games without a goal, the Shrimps enjoyed the perfect start as Jamie Devitt found Redshaw with a pinpoint delivery from the right-hand side and the striker took full advantage with a perfectly-placed volley from 10 yards out.
The goal was the spark for an entertaining, open and at times fractious, game.
Southend showed their attacking credentials and almost scored an equaliser on seven minutes when midfielder Conor Clifford hit the crossbar with a 25-yard effort that had beaten Morecambe keeper Barry Roche.
Shaq Coulthirst was the presented with a golden chance by Kevan Hurst’s fine cross.
But the striker headed straight at Roche.
Morecambe went close to adding to their advantage when Redshaw was denied by the first of several fine saves from home keeper Daniel Bentley when put through one on one, after a poor back header.
The second half saw Southend push bodies forward but the Morecambe defence remained solid.
And the Shrimps had the better chances on the counter-attack.
Redshaw was denied a second when his perfectly placed header was superbly saved by Bentley and the home keeper was at his best again to tip away a Kevin Ellison shot from the left.
Andy Fleming had a golden chance to seal the points 11 minutes from the end but with only Bentley to beat he steered his shot wide of the target.
He was almost made to pay in the final stages as Southend substitute David Worrall twice went close to grabbing an equaliser.
The former Bury man slid in at the far post on two occasions but failed to get final touches to balls flashing across the Morecambe goal-line.
The Shrimps held on for a welcome return to winning ways and end their recent run of poor results.
