Century up for red hot Jevons

Morecambe's hot-shot Phil Jevons is celebrating a century of league goals.

Christie Park's leading marksman notched up his hundredth strike in Tuesday's hard-earned 3-2 victory against Burton Albion.

Jevons said: "I'm really proud – it is a great personal landmark.

"It is a decent ratio, and I've 16 goals for the season, so hopefully I can go on to get 20.

"Even when I've had a bad spell I've kept believing, and to be honest I wasn't playing very well against Burton.

"I kept digging in, keeping my fingers crossed that the gaffer wouldn't drag me off, and then I got a little break and popped in the equaliser."

Jevons and Paul Mullin teamed up for the first time since Boxing Day against Darlington on Saturday, and delighted boss Sammy McIlroy saw them on the mark again as Morecambe snatched the points through Mullin's late clincher.

"Paul Mullin is one of the most unselfish strikers I've worked with, " said Jevons.

"He is a great example to any young player who needs a role model and wants to learn about the game.

"Paul is 35, but he has looked after himself, and still has a fantastic energy and passion for football.

"He takes a lot of knocks on the pitch, but he is a brave striker and for me he is the ultimate professional.

"I've had some good partnerships in my career, but working with Paul Mullin is one of the most enjoyable and we have forged a good understanding."

The Shrimps hit the road to Cheltenham Town tomorrow and then face a stern test against third-placed Bury at Gigg Lane next week.

Jevons scored twice against the Shakers in a 3-0 win at Christie Park in December.

"We weren't great in the first half against Burton, but a few words were said at half-time and everybody reacted," added Jevons.
