Lonergan turns to Thai boxing to keep fit

Preston goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan has turned to Thai boxing in order to be in tip-top shape for the start of pre-season training later this month.

The 26-year-old thinks it is the ideal way to maintain his sharpness during the summer break, which has another fortnight to run.

Lonergan told the Lancashire Evening Post: “The Thai boxing training has been brilliant, it’s a really good way to help me keep fit.

“I did a bit of it last season but then towards the end picked up a hand injury in a game and had to stop it.

“The work I do is so intense, it’s short, sharp stuff, perfect for the training we do in the season.

“During the summer I’ve done a few long runs, put the Ipod on and hit the road, but the more explosive stuff will be of benefit.

“It will give me a good base of fitness for when we report back for pre-season training in a couple of weeks.

“These days you can’t remain idle during the summer break, you have to do quite a lot of work when you’re away from the club.

“I went on holiday shortly after the end of the season, had a rest then, but I started doing a bit of stuff when I came back and built up from there.

“To be honest, I’m probably working harder now than what I’ll do during the season in terms of my fitness.

“I have a couple of personal trainers who do the Thai boxing work, it’s good to do.”

Meanwhile, ex-PNE winger Chris Sedgwick could be followed to Sheffield Wednesday in the coming weeks by more of his former Deepdale team-mates.

Sedgwick, 30, joined the Owls on a two-year contract this week following his release by North End.

He’s linked up with Alan Irvine again, a manager Sedgwick holds in the highest regard. Irvine says it is a possibility he might look at returning to Deepdale for some of his former players to bolster Wednesday’s squad.

A likely target is Eddie Nolan, who spent time on loan at Hillsborough last season, the defender one of eight PNE players on the transfer list.

Irvine said: “We don’t have any money for transfer fees so I can’t look at buying anybody who is not out of contract.

“But, if the qualities of players not wanted by Preston are ones we could do with, I would have to be interested.

“It’s possible there could be more from Preston. There are certainly pluses to bringing in players you have worked with before.”

North End boss Darren Ferguson admits that the current slow pace of the transfer market has meant he’s not close to being able to move on any of the listed players.

He said: “We’ve had a few sniffs in terms of our players, a few phone enquiries, but nothing concrete.

“Hopefully that will change in the next few weeks and then we will can get on with bringing people in.”

* The deadline to buy season tickets at a discount rate ends at 5pm today.

Perhaps Lonners should devote the summer to cutting out centre's from each wing. If ever there was a goalie that needs that kind of training, it's LONNERS.

You think Master Snake that Irvine is after Carter and Mellor, I am sorry but how do you know this or are you just guessing? I am simply suggesting that if he were after any of our players including Carter or Mellor i think that he should pay for them. I assume the money we get for players will more than likely dictate what we have to spend ourselves. (unless they are out of contract as are Sedgewick and i think Chilvers)

I am suggesting to you that sedgewick is out of contract so he can go where ever he wishes and that any other players Irvine wants i think as we paid good money for them so should his new club Wednesday. Mr Irvine states he has no transfer budget so how could he possibly purchase any of our players? thats addressed to Snake.
