Morecambe’s miserable away form continued with a last-gasp goal denying them a point at struggling Bristol Rovers.

Jim Bentley’s side looked set to claim a battling draw in a dire game until the home side took advantage of some shocking Shrimps’ defending to steal the points with 93 minutes on the clock.

A succession of errors from Jack Sampson, Andy Fleming and Alex Kenyon allowed Bristol Rovers substitute Ellis Harrison time to get in a cross from the right which was met excellently by the onrushing Kaid Mohammed who headed past Barry Roche from eight yards out.

It was a result that leaves the Shrimps without an away since November last year – and without a clean sheet for 17 league games.

The game itself was a dire affair with both sides struggling to find any fluency on a pitch made difficult by the fact that Bristol play rugby there.

An early seven minute delay after Alex Kenyon suffered a possible broken nose was a hint of the bruising battle that was to come.

It was Morecambe who always looked the livelier with Andy Fleming drilling a low shot just wide from the edge of the box on 26 minutes and Tony Diagne lashing an effort past the left hand post.

The home side began to find some fluency midway inside the half and youngster Alefe Santos went close with a shot on the turn just inside the area that ended wide of the left hand post before Mohamed headed straight at Roche from a good opening.

The Shrimps ended the extended first half on top and Jamie Devitt went close with another long range effort that Steve Mildenhall was glad to see sail past the post.

The second half was another drab affair with few clear chances. Morecambe still looked like they could snatch the points with Padraig Amond inches away from connecting with Robbie Threlfall’s cross, Kenyon volleyed horribly wide from the edge of the box and Lee Brown produced a goal-saving block on a fierce Fleming shot on 70 minutes.

The Shrimps survived a warning when Mohamed blazed over from one of Rovers’ few openings after being teed up by a Clarkson pass on 83 minutes but he was not to be denied 10 minutes later with a goal to help their survival chances.
