Morecambe made the FA Cup headlines for all the wrong reasons as they were dumped out of the competition by non league Dover.
The Shrimps’ poor run of form continued with another below par performance as they went down to a single Stefan Payne goal scored in first half injury time.
It was a goal that sealed one of only a handful of first round giant killings as Morecambe lost to a non league side for the first time since joining the Football League and bowed out of the competition in the first round for the fifth time in six years.
In truth Morecambe were second best for long periods in the first half but looked set to be going into the break level until Payne scored an excellent striker’s goal in in injury time.
The former Gillingham man collected the ball on the edge of the area and turned quickly away from Ryan Edwards and Andy Parrish before drilling a low shot past Morecambe’s debutant keeper Joe Lumley.
The goal gave Morecambe the jolt they needed and they started the second half much brighter.
Kevin Ellison fired a free kick against the defensive wall before Alex Kenyon thought he had levelled with a close range header from a corner that was cleared off the line with Morecambe claiming a handball.
Substitute Padraig Amond then forced a brilliant save from home keeper Andrew Rafferty in the 73rd minute with a close range snapshot and the home keeper was at his best again after racing from his goal to deny Ellison a free run on goal.
Dover went close to adding a second themselves when Tom Murphy steered a close range shot inches wide after an excellent left wing cross before Morecambe had a final opportunity in the 94th minute.
Amond had an opening to get in on goal but his first touch was poor and the chance to get in a shot went and with it Morecambe’s hopes of a late comeback.
