City boss rules out bid for Beckham

Manchester City manager Sven Goran-Eriksson has ruled out signing his former England skipper and the ex-Manchester United captain David Beckham.

Eriksson, who has talked to City owner Thaksin Shinawatra about recruitment, is reportedly looking for some big-name players to strengthen his squad at Eastlands.

However, Beckham - who is likely to win his 100th England cap against France next week after being called up by Fabio Capello - will not be joining City.

Eriksson told the Manchester Evening News: "We haven't talked about David Beckham and I think it would be very difficult to match his salary!"

"I am very happy for David that he's in the squad because I think he deserves his 100th cap."

On City's next signings, Eriksson said: "It has been our policy to have gone for younger players, but one of the things I discussed with Dr Thaksin this week was if we should take in, not an old but an older player this summer.

"If we do that it must be a very big name, a very, very big name who can fill the stadium."
