Lee Ashcroft turned in a virtuoso performance for Shawes FC as the Third Division outfit won the Lancashire Sunday League’s Syndicate Trust President’s Cup in their debut seasone.

He scored the only goal as Shawes beat First Division side AFC Ashwood.

Ashcroft made 155 appearances for Preston North End and played 90 times for West Bromwich Albion as well as playing for Wigan Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Notts County.

The final had all the makings of a tight affair and so it proved with both sides cancelling each other out. A single goal was always going to prove decisive.

Ashwood have won 13 of their 15 games in Division One and they beat a very strong Southport Vulcan in the semi-final.

Shawes have won 15 of their 18 games and bagged 100 goals in the process and neither team concede many goals.

A goalless first half looked to be heading the same way in the second period until Ashcroft got on the end of a corner in the 67th minute to head his team into the lead.

And for all Ashwood’s efforts they were unable to penetrate the resolute Shawes’ defence.

League president Ged Carberry was on hand to present the President’s Cup to Shawes captain Gareth Allen, the man of the match award to Ashcroft and the medals to the players of both sides.
